FADE IN:

To a landscape as brilliant as a painting as we follow along behind a flying butterfly, the flowers, shrubbery and such so colorful that it would make one want to reach out and feel it.

The butterfly heads into a thick set of velvet vines…

And out the other end, into a world of grey with no life in sight. Just dry cracked earth, dead trees and curled up weeds so brittle that one touch could shatter them into dust.

The only color in this no man’s land is the set of flying wings we continue to follow as the butterfly makes its way toward a cave.

It enters the dim dwelling and lands on a small hand, causing it to wake in a twitch as it does so.

LYRICS

You teach me how to feel

The face of a boy (Darren) slowly leans forward out of the shadows and towards his unique visitor. (The boy in stop motion, like in the old Christmas animations)

LYRICS

It feels alright

He rises to his feet… (Butterfly still on hand)

LYRICS

There’s nothing left to fear

Close-Up of Darren’s wide eyes, the butterfly he holds before him flapping its wings.

LYRICS

Finding myself

the further I go

As if leading him out of the cave butterfly is now on Darren’s fingertip, wings still in motion as our boy slowly heads out of his lonely rock home.

LYRICS

towards you

His POV – as he cautiously ventures out into the dry cracked earth.

To Darren turning with a 360 as his gaze follows the butterfly circling him.

LYRICS

You teach me how to love

They’re heading towards the thick vines the butterfly came through, thorned and ugly on this side.

LYRICS

parts of myself

Scared, the boy stops a few yards in front of it.

LYRICS

I hated for so long

The butterfly goes back for him and flies around his head as if urging him along…

LYRICS

loving myself

Then flies back over towards the vicious vines, but this time going to the base of them, the small entrance of a crawl space.

LYRICS

through loving you

We cut to Darren following the butterfly as he crawls through the underground tunnel, carefully avoiding thorns and other nasty things along the way.

LYRICS

I no longer live

like a man in the dark

hiding all the pieces

of my broken heart

Coming out the other end he stands to his feet, dusts off his knees and looks up– where he’s suddenly transfixed by…

LYRICS

Way up high I’m holding on

(Panning over to) the beautiful landscape he stands before.

LYRICS

Way up high I’m holding on

to you

In wonderment, he looks behind him at the new set of vines, then back at the gorgeous garden-like setting.

Darren slowly steps into the Shangri-La, the butterfly beckoning with every step the little boy takes.

The butterfly flies far and high…

LYRICS

You teach me to forgive

Then back to Darren…

LYRICS

it feels alright

Then back out again.

LYRICS

Compassion for your pain

Trying to follow, the boy’s legs begin to pick up speed.

LYRICS

compassion for mine

He looks down at his new fast pace and smiles.

LYRICS

the circle divides

It turns into a full-fledged sprint with full-fledged enjoyment coming to Darren for the first time. (Arms outstretched, the butterfly swirling around him as he does so)

LYRICS

I no longer live

like a man in the dark

holding all the pieces

of my broken heart

Keeping his eyes on the butterfly little Darren tries to turn around as he continues to run, which causes him to trip and fall face up into a soft bed of roses. As soon as the cushioning retracts the rose petals begin to carry him upwards as they are now butterflies.

LYRICS

Way up high I’m holding on

He looks to the ground as it becomes more and more distant the higher up they take him, then looks to them at his side, followed by looking straight ahead at his butterfly companion.

LYRICS

Way up high I’m holding on

to you

Darren’s eyes follow the main butterfly as it rounds his back, where he finds that the countless other winged-ones have taken the shape as one large pair of wings for him… (As he looks at the full length of them)

LYRICS

Way up high I’m holding on

Still looking back at them as they become a solid pair of wings (no longer countless butterflies) he realizes that the wings are now part of him as he continuously rotates around and around staring at them.

LYRICS

Way up high I’m holding on

to you

Darren’s self-rotation stops, the main butterfly right there in front of him as the two rotate as one. Once alone but now complete, it shows on his pure and innocent face…

We fall back on them to discover they’re now right above more natural beauty.

Like soulmates the two fly around each other from flower to flower, tree to tree, slowly leaving us as they fly deeper and deeper into the wondrous colorful world.
