EXT. STREET – DAY

A wild river of water RUSHES down a bank and engulfs a large toy soldier…

A car…

An oversized Barbie head…

A huge leaf falls down in its path and is quickly swept away as we crane up to Brandon walking down the middle of a residential street, revealing that the wild river is water rushing through the gutter.

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

Leaves are falling down

on the beautiful ground

Quick pan/zoom in on an old man across the street on his front porch lip-synching the next verse.

LYRICS

(old man lip-synching)

I heard a story from the man in red

He said the leaves are falling down

such a beautiful sound

son

I think you better go ahead

Quick zoom out back to Brandon, only now he’s twelve years old as we come to rest on a Close-Up slightly above eye level while he keeps on walking. (Holding his head up high)

LYRICS

(young Brandon lip-synching)

But you always hold your head up high

Camera floats down to low angle…

LYRICS

(young Brandon lip-synching)

‘Cause it’s a long

long

long

long way down

And continues out/back up to eye level as it tracks him…

LYRICS

(young Brandon lip-synching)

This town was meant for passing through

but it ain’t nothing new

Now go and show them

that the world stayed round

Young Brandon runs over to the gutter and runs along with the mini flowing river… (One foot on the curb, the other in the street as he looks down to it between his legs)

LYRICS

(young Brandon lip-synching)

But it’s a long

long

long

long way down

Camera tilts down on water and turns 180° to go into sort of a POV of the water pushing its way down the gutter…

Crane back up as adult Brandon is back and jogs back to the center of the street, continuing on down it… (Camera still tracking)

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

You better run for the hills

before they burn

Listen to the sound of the world

and watch it turn

I just want to show you what I know

He goes into a turn…

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

And catch you when the current lets you go

MATCH CUT:

And is now in a surreal moment of being tossed around in the high waters of the wild river.

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

Or should I just get along with myself

I never did get along with everybody else

I’ve been trying hard to do what’s right

but you know I could stay here all night

and watch the clouds fall from the sky

He reaches a calm patch and just let’s it carry him onwards…

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

This river is wild

This river is wild

He passes a giant-sized sneaker and we crane up on it as it walks along the water…

Once again finding ourselves tracking along with young Brandon.

LYRICS

(young Brandon lip-synching)

Run for the hills before they burn

Listen to the sound of the world

Watch it turn

(he twitches)

But I shake a little

Sometimes I’m nervous when I talk

(he twitches)

I shake a little

Sometimes I hate the line I walk

I just want to show you what I know

and catch you when the current lets you go

Young Brandon comes upon a few girls his age standing on the sidewalk and stops in his tracks as he stares at them/they stare at him while whispering and giggling… (Camera encircling all)

LYRICS

(young Brandon lip-synching)

Or should I just get along with myself

I never did get along with everybody else

I’ve been trying hard to do what’s right

But you know I could stay here all night

He reaches out and grabs one of them, the others getting away as they scatter and scream.

MATCH CUT:

Young Brandon and the girl fight to stay afloat in the rapid waters of the gutter river (he still has her by the wrist) toys, trash, and the old man in red whipping by.

LYRICS

(young Brandon lip-synching)

And watch the clouds fall

from the sky

because this river is wild

God speed you boy

Back up in their regular-sized world the girl stands on the sidewalk soaked and speechless, adult Brandon leaning over and down to her… (He’s dry)

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

This River is wild

He then stands up and just walks away, leaving her standing there as he goes back to walking down the center of the street. (Camera tracking)

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

Now Adams taking bombs

and he’s stuck on his mom

because that bitch

keeps trying to make him pray

He looks over to his right and camera follows his gaze with a quick pan/zoom in through the park at his side to find…

Adam, hanging by a hippie while smooth talking an eleven-year-old girl. (Adams about thirteen)

LYRICS

He’s with the hippie in the park

coming over the dark

just trying to get some of that little girl play

We quickly zoom back out to Brandon, now jogging… (Sometimes playing around with it: turns around 360°… Stretches… Jumping jacks… Etc. while we track him)

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

You better run for the hills before they burn

Listen to the sound of the world

but watch it turn

I just want to show you what I know

and catch you when the current let’s you go

Or should I get along with myself

I never did get along with everybody else

I’ve been trying hard to do what’s right

but you know I could stay here all night

and watch the clouds fall from the sky

Pan down to gutter, where tiny adult Brandon pushes up against a HUGE empty plastic cup as water builds up on the other side…

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

And pay this hell in me tonight

Unable to hold it back he’s swept away by the tidal wave and once again tosses all about amidst the strong current.

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

Because this river is wild

God speed you boy

This river is wild

This river is wild

God speed you boy

This river is wild

Crane up as raging water carries adult Brandon out of frame while young Brandon is brought in, looking out at a wide shot of a fair, sun already going down, lights beginning to shine bright…

LYRICS

(young Brandon lip-synching)

Now the cards are everywhere

Face in dust

The fairground

I don’t think I ever seen so many headlights

DISSOLVE TO:

Adult Brandon as he walks through a rotating carousel and towards its edge… (Camera falling back)

LYRICS

(Brandon singing)

But there’s something pulling me

The circus and the crew

Well they’re just passing through

making sure the merry still goes round

Off the platform of the carousel (very low, ground-level) the wild gutter river is brought into frame, only now it’s nothing but a slow trickle of water as it stretches the last of its life over dry pavement… (Continuing slow fall back until…)

LYRICS

But it’s a long

long

long way down
