EXT. TIMES SQUARE – DAY

SERIES OF SHOTS

  • Extreme Close-Up, cellphone screen, downloaded song is complete as it reaches full bar.
  • Extreme Close-Up, a headphone jack is just about to be inserted into the cellphone but a hand comes over the hand which holds it, stopping the connection from taking place.
  • Extreme Close-Up, cellphone hits pavement…

…And a huge 80’s style BOOMBOX smashes it as it lands right on top of it.

We slowly start to fall back on the towering ghetto blaster AS BASS SIMULTANEOUSLY KICKS IN, causing the stereo to pulsate as it does so.

Continuing to fall back, Robert and Darren squatted down (one by the left speaker, one by the right, both wearing shades) are brought into frame as they slowly stand while looking down at the massive music box.

LYRICS

(Robert singing)

One part

medication

One part

fascination

Camera suddenly and quickly flips up over them into a 180, where we are now at their back and with a view of the comings and goings of a crowd which fills Times Square. (A somewhat dullish Tech color as filter)

LYRICS

(Robert singing)

My lost

generation

We slowly push forward between Darren and Robert towards the crowd…

LYRICS

(Robert singing)

Got lost on me

SUDDENLY FAST-FORWARD through the crowd and tilt up on the home of MTV, a message within its windows like that of a social networking box which defines a generation…

WHAT ARE YOU DOING?

LYRICS

One part

intoxication

From Extreme Close-Up we fall back on countless cellphones being worked by the Times Square crowd.

LYRICS

One part

fascination

Once again SPEEDING back up through the crowd…

LYRICS

My losing

generation

Until we return to Robert in Extreme Close-Up.

LYRICS

(Robert singing)

Got lost on me

Extreme Close-Up, the dial on the boombox is turned to its fullest…

Extreme Close-Up, a hand grips the stereo’s handle…

And with extended arm Darren lifts it out in front of him and towards the crowd…

Who starts to take notice, the waves of energy from the massive speakers bringing a new and brighter color to the world.

Darren and Robert start to head down Times Square, the waves from the huge speakers magically transforming cellphones into classic walkmans.

LYRICS

(Darren and Robert singing)

Look what we’ve started

Look what we’ve started

Look what we’ve started

There’s something about us

We won’t always be

Ordinary

Look what we’ve started

There’s something about us

We won’t always be

Ordinary

Look what we’ve started

Ordinary

Look what we’ve started

Ordinary

The two come to a stop in front of MTV as a so-called reality star exits the studio surrounded by a swarm of paparazzi.

LYRICS

One part

medication

It is all about

the hallucination

All of a sudden Darren runs in and out of frame, whipping the ‘reality star’ into a whirlwind as he does so, which causes her to metamorphosis into nothing more than a life-sized paper cut-out which flutters to the ground.

The paps raise their heads from their cameras in bewilderment as the wool has been taken away from the eyes of their cameras.

LYRICS

Whoa…

I need my vices

like I need a vacation

From my generation

Robert is brought into frame…

LYRICS

(Robert singing)

From my generation

Camera whips around to find Darren spray painting USIC beside the M of MTV’s logo.

LYRICS

Dear Mr. Administration

Back to Robert, who shakes up his own can of spray paint…

LYRICS

(Robert singing)

I’m still waiting for my confirmation

And UNDERLINES the MUSIC in MTV.

LYRICS

I hope you accept my resignation

He walks away, tossing the can of spray paint as he does so.

LYRICS

(Robert singing)

From my generation

Darren spins round and round as he gathers momentum with the huge boombox in his hands…

And let’s it go, hurling it through the air and toward the WHAT ARE YOU DOING? windows of MTV…

LYRICS

From my generation

The massive stereo crashes through the window, SHATTERING GLASS EXPLODING OUT as it returns MUSIC to the world (with the brightness of color) by means of some of the greatest music videos ever made as the Times Square crowd starts to gravitate towards the countless screens the all-time classics are now transmitting from.

  • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Don’t Come around Here No More

  • Madonna: Like a Virgin

  • Tears for Fears: Shout

  • The Culture Club: Karma Chameleon

  • A-ha: Take on Me

All the while those who watch being reminded of what music once was.

LYRICS

Oh

Look what we’ve started

Look what we’ve started

Look what we’ve started

There’s something about us

We won’t always be

Ordinary

Look what we’ve started

There’s something about us

Look what we’ve started

There’s something about us

We won’t always be

Look what we started

There’s something about us

From the most famous screen which centers Times Square Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean plays as we crane down to find Darren and Robert on a stage below… (Slow fall back on Darren)

LYRICS

(Darren singing)

Ordinary

Ordinary

Ordinary

The two perform for the massive crowd, many holding up walkmans as part of the movement.

LYRICS

(Darren and Robert singing)

Another day

in your life

Another way

to make it right

Break away

time to say it

in your own way

CUT TO:

A massive crowd in Hollywood, walkmans in hand…

LYRICS

Change your mind

a little can

tell the world

you’re sick of it

Time to quit

Time to make it in your own way

CUT TO:

Tokyo…
