FADE IN:

EXT.CITY STREET – LATE-NIGHT

A black limo passes.

On the sidewalk a figure in an inconspicuous trenchcoat and hat pushes along a shopping cart.

Close-up, with a Kangol hat low over his head and the lapels of his trenchcoat up high to help with his concealment, Michael SINGS as he strolls down the street. (As we slowly but continually fall back on him)

LYRICS

(Michael singing)

Looking out

across the nighttime

the city winks a sleepless eye

Hear her voice

shake my window

Sweet seducing sighs

Reaching a medium shot as he pushes the shopping cart of miscellaneous items.

LYRICS

(Michael singing)

Get me out

into the nighttime

four walls won’t hold me tonight

Slightly increasing the pace of the fall back we go wide enough to see the whole city street.

LYRICS

(Michael singing)

If this town

is just an apple

then let me take a bite

DISSOLVE TO:

Slo-Mo, a blanket is spread out in the air and covers a homeless man sleeping on the sidewalk.

LYRICS

If they say

why why

tell ‘em that it’s human nature

why why

Does he do me that way

(DISSOLVE ON)

If They Say Why

To a few altered cardboard boxes as we pan over them to a pair of shoes sticking out. Holes so bad some toes and a heel is exposed.

A pair of new shoes and socks are placed beside them.

LYRICS

Why why

tell ‘em that it’s human nature

why why

Does he do me that way

DISSOLVE TO:

Somewhat Slo-Mo, we crane down onto Rockefeller Center where a few souls take in the late-night. Among them, another poverty-stricken individual. This one a girl in her teens dancing like MJ with her beat up hat and glove and the cheapest of cassette players playing a tape. Beside it a cloth with a few coins on it as the young fan performs her heart out.

LYRICS

Reaching out

touch a stranger

electric eyes are everywhere

See that girl

she knows I’m watching

DISSOLVE TO:

Michael, still pretty much concealed, is about twenty yards away, watching.

LYRICS

She likes the way I stare

DISSOLVE TO:

Continuing with the somewhat Slo-Mo, Michael’s hand disperses numerous gold coins as they rain down onto the teen’s cloth. More than a hand can actually hold, but it’s as if they’re pouring out of his palm, which is the portion that is concealed. All the while the dancing darling is so caught up in her performance she fails to notice the miracle just a couple of feet away.

LYRICS

If they say

why why

tell ‘em that it’s human nature

why why

Does he do me that way

If they say

why why

Turning around and heading out, Michael leaves.

LYRICS

(Michael singing)

Tell ‘em that it’s human nature

why why

Does he do me that way

I like livin’ this way

I like lovin’ this way

DURING INSTRUMENTAL SECTION – POV shot, remaining with the somewhat Slo-Mo but at the same time lights of passing cars and such laser out like fast-forward as we glide through the predawn streets.

Early A.M.– As the city starts to come to life Michael just strolls down the sidewalk taking it all in. (Frame speed now regular, Michael no longer with shopping cart)

LYRICS

Looking out

across the morning

the city’s heart begins to beat

Reaching out

I touch her shoulder

I’m dreaming of the street

If they say

why why

tell ‘em that it’s human nature

why why

Does he do me that way

If they say

why why

As Michael walks a black limo pulls up beside him. He gets in and it drives off.

LYRICS

Why why

Does he do me that way

DISSOLVE TO:

The homeless man, warm and comfortable, wakes with a smile. A surprise overtakes him as he notices the blanket he’s cozied up with. And his smile of wonder gets even bigger as he spots a thermos of coffee and brown paper bag of breakfast sitting next to him.

LYRICS

(Ad Libbs)

DISSOLVE TO:

Another very happy homeless man tying the shoelaces of his new shoes.

LYRICS

(Ad Libbs)

DISSOLVE TO:

The teen girl packing up her cheap cassette player and such. When she gets to her cloth of coins she stops in mid-motion, her hand coming over her shocked mouth as she finds the gold coins left by Michael, his trademark white glove covering a few.

LYRICS

(Ad Libbs)

DISSOLVE TO:

That black limo driving down the street.

As it passes we float up higher and higher until we reach an Extreme wide shot of New York City.
